A Deconsecrated Church Reimagined as a Design Stay
The Ark Coolamon is a deconsecrated 1920s church transformed into a calm, design-led retreat in the heart of the Riverina. From the moment you step inside, scale and stillness take over: leadlight windows filter the light, cathedral ceilings soar overhead and the building’s original sense of reverence remains.
Restored with a “less, but better” approach, The Ark allows the architecture to lead. Furniture is placed with restraint, materials are chosen for texture and tone, and the main living space feels both expansive and deeply intimate. A mezzanine bedroom overlooks the nave, offering a sense of retreat within the volume of the church.
Guests have the entire building to themselves, with underfloor heating, luxurious linens and a thoughtfully prepared welcome platter adding comfort to the experience. Set in the centre of Coolamon, the stay is close to the restored hotel, gourmet grocer and cheese co-op, though the greatest pleasure may be simply staying inside, watching light move across the walls.
